7-Dehydrocholesterol Description
7-Dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC) is a chemical compound closely related to cholesterol and is an intermediate step in the biosynthesis of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). 7-Dehydrocholesterol is primarily found in the skin, where under exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from sunlight, it undergoes a transformation to become previtamin D3, which then thermally isomerizes to vitamin D3. This conversion is a critical step in the natural production of vitamin D in humans and animals. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a vital role in regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis, bone health, and immune system function.
7-Dehydrocholesterol Applications
7-Dehydrocholesterol is used commercially in the manufacturing of vitamin D3 supplements. These supplements are commonly prescribed to prevent or treat vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to various health issues such as weak bones, muscle weakness, and increased risk of falls and fractures. It is also used in the food industry, where vitamin D3 fortified foods and beverages are produced to enhance their nutritional value. Additionally, researchers sometimes use 7-DHC in scientific experiments to better understand cholesterol metabolism and vitamin D synthesis pathways.
(1) 7-Dehydrocholesterol is the biosynthetic precursor of cholesterol. It helps produce vitamin D3 when exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. 7-dehydrocholesterol has been used as an internal standard for the determination of sterols.
(2) 7-Dehydrocholesterol is used to diagnose Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome. Infants with Smith-Lemli-Opitz (SLO) syndrome have reduced cholesterol levels in the blood and tissues and greatly increased concentrations of 7-dehydrocholesterol and its isomer 8-dehydrocholesterol.
